Dear Alumnus,

It is my pleasure to inform you that the Ninth Convocation of SPA Bhopal will be held on 19th November 2022 from 3:00 pm onwards at IISER Bhopal Auditorium. In this Convocation ceremony, degree will be awarded to all U.G, P.G. and Ph.D students who have graduated from SPA Bhopal since EighthConvocation till date. The Ninth Convocation will be conducted offline/ in-person for all degree recipients.

Rehearsal for the Convocation ceremony is scheduled on 18th November, 2022, 11:00 am onwards. Degree recipients attending the Convocation in person are required to join this rehearsal.

We extend a most cordial invitation to you to attend the Ninth Convocation. We hope that you will make it convenient to join the Convocation. We also extend an invitation to your parents/ spouse to attend and witness the ceremony along with you.

Kindly fill the earlier circulated Google form and pay the requisite fee of Rs. 3000/-.

Description: Durga Shanker Mishra - Wikipedia Shri Durga Shanker Mishra, Chief Secretary to Government of Uttar Pradesh, belongs to 1984 batch of Indian Administrative Service of Uttar Pradesh Cadre. He has had held various senior assignments in both State and Union Governments covering Revenue Administration, Internal Security, Vigilance, Civil Aviation, Tourism, Sports, Agriculture Research, State Taxation, Medical & Health, Mining and Urban Development. He had served as Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh for over two years. He was Secretary to Government of India in the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for over four and half years and played a pivotal role in planning and executing various flagship Urban Missions viz. Swachh Bharat Mission - Urban, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna-Urban, Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation, Deen Dayal Antyodaya Yojana - National Urban Livelihood Mission, Smart City Mission, Pradhan Mantri Street Vendor AtamnirbharNidhi (PM SVANidhi), Development of Metro Rails and other urban transport across the country, etc.

Shri Mishra holds a B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from IIT, Kanpur, an MBA in International Business from University of Western Sydney, Australia and a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Policy from International Institute of Social Studies, the Hague, Netherlands. He has taken keen interest in promoting good governance and has published various papers on the subjects related to good governance, public administration and development administration in national/ international journals and books. He has represented Union/ State Government at various national/ international for a, workshops and conferences. He had been a visiting faculty in the University of Guelph, Canada. He is fond of trekking, sports and tourism.

Distinguished Chief Guest, Shri Durga Shanker Mishra, Chief Secretary, Government of Uttar Pradesh; Honourable Members of the Board of Governors and Senate, dear colleagues in the faculty and staff, esteemed invitees, my very dear graduands, students, parents, representatives from the media, ladies and gentlemen, it is indeed my profound pleasure and honour to welcome you all to the 9th Convocation of School of Planning and Architecture Bhopal, an Institute of National Importance under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. I wholeheartedly thank you for being a part of this Convocation Ceremony. I consider it to be my great privilege to present the progress of SPA Bhopal since the last Convocation held on 20thNovember2021. Despite the pandemic situation, we could successfully conduct the last convocation through online mode and the Institute started functioning in the offline mode since January 2022.

It is with great pride, I place on record that today SPA Bhopal spearheads both in teaching and research in various domains of knowledge, namely, - urban and regional planning, environmental planning, transport planning, landscape architecture, design, conservation, and urban design. Since its inception way back in 2008, SPA, Bhopal has been endeavouring to deliver the highest quality of education by nurturing the future professionals in the fields of planning, architecture, and design. SPA Bhopal has been working to emerge as a think tank in the sphere of planning, architecture and design education and practice nurtured by a forward-looking, dynamic and efficient collective leadership following a multidisciplinary approach.

The institute is committed to contribute its share in addressing the various challenges related to the built environment through sustainable architectural and planning practices, socio-cultural & environmental sustenance through innovative design and technological solutions. I take immense pride to place on record that in the last one year, the institute has made admirable progress.

It is my great pleasure to inform that in this 9th Convocation, a total of 256 graduands (100 undergraduate, 152 post graduate, and 4 PhD) will be awarded degrees. Along with these degrees, two medals of excellence, nine Proficiency Gold Medals to the toppers of respective departments, and Best Thesis certificate will also be awarded.

I take pride in informing you that our faculty have been actively contributing to academics and research through publications in the peer reviewed journals and participation in various national and international conferences besides bagging the prestigious Nehru Fulbright fellowship. More than 25 research papers were published in Scopus source listed journals/ conferences and books during the year 2021 and 2022. In addition to this, many of our faculty members are also contributing to several ongoing prestigious research and consultancy projects. Quite a few of our colleagues have been in various committees across various Government organizations and Academic institutions in different capacities.

Presently, SPA Bhopal has collaborations with several national and international institutes of high repute like UN-Habitat, GIZ (Germany), NITTTR Bhopal, NID Bhopal, IISER Bhopal, The Madhya Pradesh State Bamboo Mission, DG Research Cell Madhya Pradesh Police (DRC-MPPA), MSME Technology Center Bhopal, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Good Governance and Policy Analysis Bhopal, Rajiv Gandhi University Arunachal Pradesh, The University of Florence, NTNU Norway, etc. In addition to these, recently we have also signed MoU with CSIR-AMPRI for collaborative efforts in research and technology transfer of application of advanced material in the domain of building construction. These collaborations with various institutions of repute are enabling us in knowledge sharing and enrichment towards socially responsible activities.

In the past one year, we could successfully conduct and organize a number of academic activities with the able support and collaboration of eminent domain experts from the academia and industries. We have organized number of special lectures, workshops, webinars, and training programmes for our students and faculty besides professionals, and officials of various Government and autonomous institutions.

Recently, we have successfully celebrated the ‘Hindi Pakhwada’ at our institute to promote and popularize the use of Rajbhasha in official work through a fortnight long activities having several competitions on essay writing, hand writing, administrative/ technical vocabulary, poetry, etc.. Members of faculty and staff and a large number of our students took part in the celebration enthusiastically.

Our students, our most treasured asset, have done us proud by their participation and achievements at various national and international competitions in various extracurricular events bringing laurels to the institute. I take this as an opportunity to congratulate and thank them for making us proud. Hailing from different geographies, our students superbly displayed the unity in diversity of our country by celebrating Hindu Gudi Padwa, Vishu (Malayalam New Year), Puthandu (Tamil New Year), Bohag Bihu (Assamese New Year), Pana Sankranti (Odia New Year), Poila Boishakh (Bengali New Year), Janmashtami, Ganesh Chaturthi, Onam, Navratri, Ramleela and Bathukamma with profound affection and gaiety.

It is my proud privilege to place on record that presently the institute is engaged with a total of more than 40 ongoing Research and Consultancy projects. Of which, five of them were the new projects commenced during the last one year. These projects fetched the Institute a sum of Rs. 65.00 lakhs in the financial year 2021- 2022. Our esteemed clients include: Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ India); Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Good Governance and Policy Analysis, Bhopal; Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Limited; Government of Tamil Nadu; Government of Manipur; Government of Uttar Pradesh; Saugor Cantonment Board and Indian Council for Social Science Research.

Our Training and Placement Cell has taken all possible effort to enable our students undergo internship in various institutions and organizations of repute across the globe. I am extremely delighted to inform that around 50 percent of the alumni have been decently placed, and are now successfully contributing to various organizations in India and abroad. The highest package received by a few of our alumni is around rupees 18 lakhs per annum. Besides, around 10 percent of the alumni have been admitted for higher studies in various reputed institutions in India and abroad. It is my immense pleasure to inform that during the last one year, we could successfully augment our institute infrastructure. The construction of our new Academic Building is now in full swing and will soon be functional.

We, as an institute of national importance, nurture the effort to constantly innovate towards building the nation. Presently, we are making sincere efforts for inclusive structural academic changes in line with the National Education Policy 2020. To cater to the future needs, we are developing many new academic degree programmes, integrated with the latest and emerging technologies and practices, in the allied disciplines of planning, architecture and design. SPA Bhopal is always committed to shape the future leaders in the fields of planning, architecture and design. As always, we are putting the best of our efforts with unstinting support from all the stakeholders.

I once again congratulate all our graduands and their proud parents on this wonderful occasion of 9th Convocation of SPA Bhopal. I wish my very dear graduands a very bright future ahead.

Frequently Asked Questions: Ninth Convocation of SPAB

1. Dress Code:
    ► For male students – Off-white Kurta Pyjama
    ► For female students –Light colour traditional dress (Saree/ Salwar Suit )
2. Accommodation:
    ► The Graduands are required to arrange their accommodation outside SPAB campus.
    ► If anyone wants to stay inside campus, he/ she may be allowed to stay inside the hostels but they will be required to share a room with any willing junior. For this purpose prior permission is needed to be taken from the Office of the Dean (Student Affairs) at deansa@spabhopal.ac.in or Office of the Senior Hostel Warden at seniorhostelwarden@spabhopal.ac.in through a separate communication.
Steps to follow for the Above:
    ► Graduands for Convocation 2022 may be allowed to stay in the hostels, provided you are ready to stay with an existing student on mutual consent.
    ► Each student (Graduand) needs to send a separate request for himself/ herself only.
    ► One residing student can accommodate only one Graduand.
    ► Graduands need to fill up the Declaration form
(i) email the filled-up document to caretaker.boys@spabhopal.ac.in/ caretaker.girls@spabhopal.ac.in (before arrival)
(ii) submit a hard copy to the Hostel Caretakers Office on the day of arrival.
    ► The prior submission of the correctly filled-up document will ensure the permission to stay in the Hostel for the mentioned duration.

3. Transportation / Conveyance:
    ► Bus service will be available from Lalghati to IISER Bhopal and IISER Bhopal to Lalghati on 18th & 19th November, 2022 at specified time. Timings will be communicated shortly.cated shortly.
4. Rehearsal:
    ► Attendance in Rehearsal is mandatory.
    ► The Graduands, who attends the Rehearsal on 18th November 2022, will only be allowed to receive their Degrees physically on Convocation Day (19th November 2022).
